A million English Words and IT security – what’s the connection?

July 2009 by Marc Jacob

We’ve just hit the million word mark in English, but what’s that got to do with IT security and managing your firewalls? Calum Macleod from Tufin has written an enjoyable piece that links the generalizations that are made in the English language to all the many generalizations that are made in IT security – which often ends in totally disaster without breaches and mistakes.

Using the above analogy and without pushing firewall technology Calum explains how it’s just as impractical to expect someone to generate a firewall policy from an existing firewall as it would be to expect someone with limited language skills to translate a document from English to another language.

He explains what the challenges are when creating firewall rules to meet the latest policies and how to go about rolling out a smooth firewall management policy.
