Vigil@nce - socat: buffer overflow of PROXY-CONNECT
February 2014 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can generate a buffer overflow when he can change
PROXY-CONNECT of socat, in order to trigger a denial of service,
and possibly to execute code.
Impacted products: Fedora, Unix (platform)
Severity: 2/4
Creation date: 29/01/2014
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The socat tool is used to establish socket streams.
The PROXY-CONNECT parameter of the command line indicates the HTTP
proxy to use. However, if the size of the server name is greater
than the size of the storage array (BUFLEN), an overflow occurs
because the sprintf() function is used.
An attacker can therefore generate a buffer overflow when he can
change PROXY-CONNECT of socat, in order to trigger a denial of
service, and possibly to execute code.
