Vigil@nce - Fine Free file: unreachable memory reading via Pascal

February 2015 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can force Fine Free file to analyze a malicious Pascal
file, in order to trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: Debian, PHP, Unix (platform)

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 05/02/2015

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Fine Free file (libmagic) program analyzes files, in order to
automatically recognize their type.

However, during the analysis of a Pascal file, libmagic tries to
read a memory area which is not reachable, which triggers a fatal
error.

An attacker can therefore force Fine Free file to analyze a
malicious Pascal file, in order to trigger a denial of service.
