Thales LTE Technology Achieves Key Industry Milestone

May 2013 by Marc Jacob

Thales Communications. Inc. has successfully completed the Department of Commerce’s Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Phase 3 LTE Demonstration Network Test Plan, demonstrating interoperability of its public safety Long-Term Evolution (LTE) solution.

These results confirm interoperability of the Thales Edge Centric Core Network solution with other vendor Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment as well as end-to-end connectivity with multiple user devices. Testing was conducted at the Department of Commerce Boulder Laboratories in Colorado, and supported the work of the PSCR program team. The successful completion demonstrates Thales’s support of the U.S. Federal Communication Commission’s goal of broadband network interoperability and FirstNet objectives for a nationwide multi-vendor public safety LTE network.

The Thales Edge Centric Core Network solution differentiates from traditional carrier scale cores by pushing intelligence to the edge and integrating full-featured Evolved Packet Core (EPC), subscriber management, and other control functions. This approach can offer advantages to public safety users in improved resiliency, scalability, and more economical communications. User traffic is routed locally, enabling localized operational control, which minimizes breaks in communications.
