DataFort unveiled Bytebaq Professional Server Edition

July 2010 by Marc Jacob

DataFort, the developer of data protection managed services, unveiled Bytebaq Professional Server Edition, the industry’s first fixed-price server backup service. Breaking away from traditional variable pricing models, the new DataFort service charges an annual fee according to the overall storage capacity of each backed up server. RRPs for a full year of unlimited backup space (the size of the backup can be considerably larger than the source data as it includes multiple file versions) are: £349 for 500 GB servers, £499 for servers with disk capacity above 500GB and less than one terabyte, and £899 for capacities between one and two terabytes. These yearly fees equate to the cost of a single month’s backup service from most competing brands.

Bytebaq Professional Server Edition is sold through the channel, allowing resellers to offer it as part of their managed service portfolio. The lack of overheads (hardware acquisition, software licenses, management of infrastructure, bandwidth and data centre fees, etc.) makes Bytebaq Professional Server Edition the ideal service to help a channel company evolve from a basic support provider to a fully-fledged IT management partner as meeting a customer’s need for ongoing secure offsite backup can turn into the thin end of the wedge in building an MSP (Managed Service Provider) relationship.

The new DataFort service gives both end users and resellers unmatched management capabilities: for example a customer can see all the monitored servers on their network in one control panel, whereas the service provider can see that customer’s servers and all those belonging to their other customers, at the same time.

Bytebaq Professional Server Edition addresses a number of requirements including the need to:

· deploy a cost-effective, unobtrusive secondary backup method

· automatically backup critical data offsite

· manage the cost of backup even when data volumes grow

· perform incidental data recovery via the Internet.

Bytebaq Professional Server Edition enables the creation of multiple data sets that ‘trickle’ to the data centre throughout the day at rates determined by the administrator. At the time of retrieval, one or more encrypted USB disks holding the entire data set can be ordered should the recovery requirement exceed the capacity of the business’s bandwidth.

Security over the Internet is ensured by 256-bit AES encryption, which takes place after the Bytebaq software has compressed the data on the client server(s); the data is then stored in Tier 3, financial-standard data centres.

Over the past year DataFort has consolidated its position as a leading provider of data protection and recovery services by adopting the fixed-cost, unlimited service model. The company now boasts a product line that ranges from single PC or laptop backup (Bytebaq PC edition) to services that come close to meeting the SLAs offered through full-system replication but at a tenth of the cost (Hi-5 High Availability Service).
