Vigil@nce - QEMU: NULL pointer dereference via IDE AHCI
February 2016 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can force a NULL pointer to be dereferenced in the IDE
AHCI emulation of QEMU, in order to trigger a denial of service.
Impacted products: QEMU, Ubuntu.
Severity: 1/4.
Creation date: 29/01/2016.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The QEMU product is an emulator of hardware platform.
In includes an emulation of the IDE AHCI interface. The routine
address_space_map() allocates an address space. However, the
caller does not check the returned value, used via the res_fis
field, before using it.
An attacker can therefore force a NULL pointer to be dereferenced
in the IDE AHCI emulation of QEMU, in order to trigger a denial of
service.
