Survey: New password tech not enough for Brits fearful of data criminals

December 2017 by GMX

Despite new technologies promising to revolutionise device and online security, British adults still feel safest with a classic password entry, research commissioned by email and cloud provider GMX has found.

Biometric methods such as fingerprint and facial recognition are now available in many devices, but almost two-thirds (57 per cent) of those surveyed prefer passwords.

The results make for interesting reading, with data security at the top of the agenda for UK adults, particularly considering the approach of the GDPR. GMX discovered that more than half of respondents (51 per cent) do not want companies to save or use such personal data, while more than a third (39 per cent) are anxious that online criminals might get past biometric authentication methods. A similar number (37 per cent) fear not being able to access their online accounts as a result of malfunctions.

“Biometric log-in methods are still far from becoming mass market. However, for more security throughout the internet it is very important that alternative authentication methods like biometry are further researched. In order to meet the concerns of the users, providers have to fulfill high data protection requirements concerning the storage and use of biometrical data”, comments GMX CEO Jan Oetjen.

The most favoured biometric authentication method, fingerprint sensoring, is preferred by 24 per cent of Brits, with four per cent favouring eye scan. Face and voice recognition still hardly play a role: each is preferred by only one per cent of the respondents respectively.

While there is some scepticism, however, some 29 per cent of Britons believe biometric log-in methods are, on the whole, a good addition to passwords, but only in combination with manual methods like passwords and PIN entry.

For this representative study, 1,101 people in Great Britain were surveyed between 6 November and 13 November 2017. Results are representative for the British population 18+.
