Storage Fusion announces a new Storage Benchmarks report
December 2011 by Storage Fusion
Storage Fusion announces a new Storage Benchmarks report that contains key findings based upon the aggregated data analyzed by its Storage Resource Analysis (SRA) service. This innovative report provides a unique insight into how organizations are buying, configuring and utilizing storage arrays from EMC, IBM, NetApp, HP and HDS.
Compared to questionnaires and other sources the Storage Benchmarks report is based on actual data and provides some key observations for the three years from 2008 to 2010 – approximately 1500 arrays in total, 107PB of installed raw capacity and nearly half a million disk drives. An updated report for 2011’s figures will be released in Q1 2012.
“Approximately 40% of data still lives on tier-1 storage, suggesting that enterprises are still not deploying ILM properly or taking full advantage of newer technologies that more efficiently use the back-end storage, such as thin provisioning and auto-tiering”, said Kingsley Eley from Storage Fusion. “Up until now it’s been more economical for some organizations to continue to throw disks at the problem of data explosion, rather than optimize and better use what they have. The impending disk shortage problem in 2012 may well tip the balance, forcing organizations to re-think their approach to growth.”
The next Storage Benchmarks report will contain additional information including an analysis by industry and vendor. Storage Fusion is also planning to enhance their SRA service so that customers will be able to benchmark their own environment
against companies of a similar size and sector. A free copy of the report is available for download at: http://www.storagefusion.com/home/resources.
