Security breach at Equifax compromises Kroger exmployee social security numbers, dates of birth

May 2016 by Richard Barger, Chief Intelligence Officer, ThreatConnect, Inc

News broke over the weekend that grocery giant Kroger had sent an email to current and former employees, indicating that their Social Security numbers and dates of birth may be compromised. The extent of the breach is not yet known, according to the email. It is believed the employee information was accessed via a security breach at Equifax. The grocery giant has a total of about 400,000 employees and nearly $110 billion in sales, according to its website.

If you are planning on covering this breach, please see below for commentary from Richard Barger, Chief Intelligence Officer, ThreatConnect, Inc.
"Kroger and Equifax are just one more set of victims of attackers exploiting the fragmentation that lies between a client and a service provider. Organisations which entrust data with a second party often have little insight into their vendors security people, processes or technology - therefore they cannot effectively connect the dots when it comes to pre or post breach decision making and response actions. We encourage more companies to use a cybersecurity intelligence platform for private threat intel sharing where everyone in their supply chain can close the gaps being exploited by criminals."
