Robust hardware solution even for external applications: the spo-book RUGGED HM87

May 2015 by Marc Jacob

The model is ideally equipped for current and coming demands thanks to an update to Intel’s high-performance Haswell platform while being flexibly extendable.

The extremely energy-efficient Haswell architecture also allows the spo-book RUGGED HM87 excellent passive cooling of the integrated Intel core i3 processor. This is manufactured in the 22nm process and therefore offers a higher degree of efficiency for similarly high performance compared with direct predecessors. The passive cooling also avoids the use of moving parts within the stable metal housing of the spo-book RUGGED HM87.

Its enclosed housing means that the spo-book RUGGED HM87 is in a position to remove dirt, dust and other contaminants fully from the inside of the device. Like its predecessor models, the device is therefore suitable for applications inside industrial systems, production halls and at other exposed sites. The technology of the spo-book RUGGED HM87 is well equipped even to withstand extreme temperature differences: the device can also be operated at external temperatures of between -30° and 60° C, without suffering any restrictions in terms of functionality. These devices have already been tried and tested on Alpine glaciers, for example, where normal computers or notebooks cannot be used because of the environmental conditions.

As great care was taken during the design and development to ensure as small a construction size as possible, the spo-book RUGGED HM87 is a very compact industrial PC. The just four-centimetre-high device can therefore be transported quickly to its destination point and to fit it there, even under difficult conditions. Thanks to the freely selectable size of the working memory right through to eight gigabytes, this model of the RUGGED series is also very easy to adapt to your own requirements, which is also true of the hard drive, as there either a classic, magnetic working version or a modern SSD hard-drive can be used, which is able to drastically accelerate any type of file operations.

The hardware alone, however, does not decide the ultimate productivity which the computer is able to achieve. spo-comm therefore leaves all buyers to choose freely between Windows 7 and Windows 8 or version 8.1 of the Microsoft operating system in a 32 and 64-bit design and an alternative installation by Ubuntu as a free Linux distribution. The spo-book RUGGED HM87 can therefore be tailored to meet your particular requirements in terms of software technology. In addition, there are four USB interfaces available, a variety of outlets for video signals and two gigabit-LAN ports including an optional WLAN to be able to connect any external peripherals to this high-quality PC for demanding environments.

The successful update on the new Haswell architecture means that the spo-book RUGGED HM87 is therefore also prepared for future work in harsh environments and across the extended temperature range. This new, very high-performance and yet passively cooled successor to the successful minicomputer by spo-comm is available to all potential clients straight away.
