Richard Greco, Chairman of Cellcrypt: Is big brother really out to get us?

October 2008 by Richard Greco, Chairman of Cellcrypt

Recent speculation in the UK press about the Government recording telephone calls and tracking internet habits, suggests that the UK is turning into a ’Stalker State’. But Richard Greco, Chairman of Cellcrypt, a company in the field of secure voice solutions over wired and mobile networks, thinks that we should take a reasoned and realistic approach to voice security.

In order to track down criminal networks and prevent terrorist activities, the UK Government has clearly defined frameworks in which it can work to achieve these aims. And to implement these policies it is necessary to be able to operate in a world where ’bad guys’ use a plethora of modern communications mechanisms, including email, SMS messaging, VOIP, Internet chat etc.

"It is no secret that governments around the world intercept certain communications as part of their approach to protecting nations and their citizens from criminal and terrorist activity," says Greco. "But while authorities need to be able to take legitimate measures to disrupt terrorist events, the reality is that unsecured communications are open to attack by much less principled individuals and organisations than the Government."

While internet communications are often protected by strong cryptography, telephone conversations in particular, are a target for illegal interception for criminal purposes because they are only lightly protected, if at all. Yet there are commercial security solutions available to companies and individuals who wish to protect their sensitive conversations from being overheard by others. It is perfectly possible, cost effective and entirely legal to add a layer of protection to secure voice communications over public networks.

Cellcrypt’s aim is to provide individuals and corporations with secure voice solutions, which will protect their sensitive information from unlawful interception, ensuring that the uptake in secure voice technology supports the legitimate and lawful aim for privacy of voice communications.
