May 2015 by Marc Jacob

HGST, a Western Digital company announced a broad portfolio of certified devices for VMware Virtual SAN™, VMware’s software-defined storage product. The HGST hardware certification list includes 12Gb/s SAS solid state drives (SSDs), PCIe Flash accelerators, as well as performance and capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) from the company’s award winning Ultrastar family, including the industry’s only helium-filled HDD product line. Together, these certified devices provide interoperable storage tiers for VMware Virtual SAN.

HGST is the leader in Enterprise SAS SSDs and Helium HDDs, delivering innovation to the fast growing storage market. VMware VSAN customers can now incorporate these leading technologies to meet the demands for more efficient storage environments, creating a better balance between capacity, performance, physical space and energy usage in their Virtual SAN deployment. With the certified PCIe, 12Gb/s SAS SSD and HDDs, as well as the industry’s only helium-filled HDD, customers have the ability to customize and tier their infrastructure deployment for mission-critical, high-performance applications.

The VMware Compatibility Guide includes the Ultrastar He6 SAS 512n, from the industry’s only family of Ultrastar helium-filled HDDs; the Ultrastar C10K1800 SAS 512n and Ultrastar C15K600 SAS 512n high performance HDDs; the entire HGST FlashMAX® PCIe SSD family; the HGST s1122 PCIe Accelerator; HGST S842 and S846 SAS SSDs; and HGST’s family of 12Gb/s SAS Ultrastar SSD800MH.B and Ultrastar SSD1600MM SSDs. All of these solutions offer VMware Virtual SAN customers the flexibility to granularly scale-up or scale-out their storage environment, while maintaining superior performance and endurance for mission-critical applications.
