GlobalPlatform to Host TEE Workshop for Trusted Application Developers

August 2015 by Marc Jacob

GlobalPlatform, the association which standardizes the management of applications on secure chip technology, is hosting a workshop for application developers on Monday 12 October in Santa Clara, focused on the trusted execution environment (TEE). The workshop will take place one day prior to its annual TEE conference and will provide developers with the knowledge, understanding of available development tools and real-world use cases needed to develop trusted applications (TA) – featuring functionality like mobile payments, identification and digital rights management – that can be deployed to GlobalPlatform-qualified TEEs.

The TEE is a secure area of the main processor in a smartphone (or any connected device) which ensures that sensitive data is stored, processed and protected in an isolated, trusted environment. Industry interest in the TEE continues to accelerate, as it addresses the security needs of value-added applications by offering a higher level of security than a Rich OS and enabling services such as trusted storage, trusted time, efficient cryptographic functions and the trusted user interface.

The workshop will consist of four instructor-led sessions, hosted by representatives from GlobalPlatform, Intel, Linaro and Trustonic. The full-day session is aimed at solution architects, application developers, service providers and other professionals engaged in the development and testing of TAs.

GlobalPlatform will open the workshop with detailed information about the TEE application programming interfaces (APIs) that have been defined by GlobalPlatform to provide access to the trusted services facilitated by TEEs. The session will introduce the developer community to the TEE Client and Internal Core APIs, in addition to those that focus on the need for a trusted user interface and the management of access to secure elements. This knowledge will provide the foundation for the implementation-focused sessions later in the day.

The GlobalPlatform session will be followed by the Intel, Linaro and Trustonic led sessions, in which delegates will receive an in-depth introduction to their respective development environments – including tools that can be used on a standard computer – that exist for the development of GlobalPlatform-compatible TAs on different device form factors and across multiple vendors. Over the course of the one-day workshop, delegates will gain a comprehensive understanding of the process for creating, debugging and deploying TA’s in accordance with GlobalPlatform requirements.
