G DATA prevents massive wave of attacks by banking Trojans

51 percent of Germans carried out banking transactions online in 2015 (source: Eurostat). At the end of the year, G DATA SecurityLabs recorded massive attacks by banking Trojan Dridex, which were averted by the unique G DATA BankGuard technology. The criminals behind Dridex tried to use spam email containing fictitious invoices or supposed tax refunds to lure recipients into their trap. The attacks by banking Trojans mainly targeted English-speaking countries. 80 percent of all target sites identified came from the Anglophone region. At the start of the second half of 2015, it initially appeared that attacks by banking Trojans might be significantly reduced. Swatbanker, which belongs to the Cridex group and was previously dominant, almost completely disappeared from the picture. In December the banking Trojan Dridex was responsible for a huge wave of attacks through the mass distribution of emails containing supposed invoices.
5,143,784 new malware variants in 2015
In the second half of 2015, experts at G DATA SecurityLabs recorded a total of 2,098,062 new signature variants. The total number of new malware files for 2015 was 5,143,784 – just under the value for 2014. Following a rapid increase in the second half of 2014 and the first half of 2015, the outbreaks appeared to have abated.
