Energy Trader RWE Supply & Trading Strengthens Security and Boosts Productivity with Palo Alto Networks

September 2014 by Marc Jacob

Palo Alto Networks® announced that RWE Supply & Trading has selected and deployed the Palo Alto Networks enterprise security platform to identify, control, and safely enable applications on its network.

RWE Supply & Trading hosts Europe’s largest energy trading floor, and serves as the interface between RWE Group and global wholesale markets for energy and energy-related raw materials. RWE Group also is a leading European electrical and gas provider with approximately 50 billion Euro in 2012 revenues.

"Palo Alto Networks is the only company that met all of our criteria as a true next-generation security platform," said Dr. Andres Rohr, Head of Strategic Information Security, RWE Supply & Trading. "Their solutions are unique in their ability to enable secure access based on user-ID and deep packet inspection, instead of using old techniques like IP address, destination, and protocol type. The deep granular visibility empowers us to be proactive in creating and deploying policies that give users secure access, while also improving security."

Prior to installing Palo Alto Networks, RWE Supply & Trading had disparate security technologies deployed worldwide. This led to inconsistent application usage policies, operational inefficiencies, and security vulnerabilities. These issues were addressed by standardizing security on the Palo Alto Networks enterprise security platform. The company reports infections from Java have dropped 99 percent, and that no malware is reaching its end point antivirus engines anymore.. The comprehensive functionality of the Palo Alto Networks platform has enabled RWE Supply & Trading to consolidate the number of devices managed in its network.

RWE Supply & Trading selected Palo Alto Networks after comparing it with a broad spectrum of traditional and legacy security products. The deployment includes more than 20 Palo Alto Networks devices with Threat Prevention, URL Filtering, and IPS, as well as WildFire, which proactively detects and prevents known and unknown cyber threats, and the Panorama management offering.

RWE Supply & Trading is actively evaluating the use of the Palo Alto Networks forthcoming Advanced Endpoint Protection offering as well as GlobalProtect to extend its secure application enablement policies to all of its users, regardless of location or device used for access.
