January 2014 by Marc Jacob
Power management company Eaton has launched a new online tool that enables users to discover how vulnerable the power grid is to power outages. Eaton’s Blackout and Power Outage Tracker for (insert country) gives the user the option to explore power outage causes and the impacts they may have had on people and businesses in their region, as well as allow them to submit their own entry for any outages they might be aware of. The online tracker, that can be found at www.eaton.com/blackouttracker, uses reported power outage information from news services, newspapers, websites and personal accounts to analyse the impact of blackouts in (insert country).
For businesses, downtime, even if only for a matter of seconds, can carry a staggering price tag. For example, when power outages affect IT systems, a company can take up to 48 hours to reconfigure a network, and days, or even weeks, to re-enter lost data. This can be a steep price to pay when considering innovative power protection is available to them for a fraction of what a business would be spending on hardware solutions. One of the best ways to mitigate the risks associated with power outages is by installing an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, including software and connectivity devices, to ensure all equipment is safeguarded against all types of power problems.
