secunet introduces policy framework for eID PKIs

secunet will introduce a policy framework for public key infrastructures with regard to electronic identity documents (eID). The framework includes all international specifications (policies) that are currently required for operating a PKI for government identity documents such as passports. Governments that wish to establish a PKI for their eID infrastructure can use the framework to significantly reduce the expenditure of establishing their own set of regulations.
Government public key infrastructures (PKI) for modern electronic identity documents provide a range of requirements for systems and processes. In order to ensure interoperability between different electronic identity documents and various national background systems, precise definitions and clear rules in particular are required within the infrastructures. In this way, countless international regulations form the foundation for the smooth running of processes in border crossings and identification. National policies implement the international specifications so that each of the established processes are adhered to.
secunet has now established a basic framework for eID PKI policies that facilitates comparatively fast and straightforward implementation of the internationally applicable specifications for a national eID PKI. Furthermore, the framework includes the foundation for decision-making for variables that are not covered by (international) specifications, but that are required for the secure operation of a governmental PKI. By considering all current national and international specifications and through the modular development of the framework, only minimal customer adjustments are required to apply the framework - this is reflected in the costs and above all in the speed of implementation, and offers an attractive alternative for customers to develop their own set of regulations.
