iSecur, FINSECUR’s IoT department, is launching a LoRaWAN based turnkey solution to remotely monitor industrial electrical equipments

March 2017 by Marc Jacob

Finsécur is a French independent and innovative company, which managed to grow from a startup in 2000 to a leader today in the fire detection market in spite of its legally complex environment. The company has been bringing to the market many valuable disruptive innovations, increasing the user’s experience and its safety, while focusing on the quality required by the sector’s certifications. Founding member of the LoRa Alliance, Finsecur unveils today iSecur’s offer, called LoRaTool, a set of solutions connected in LoRaWAN to remotely monitor industrial electrical equipment, based on the LoRaWAN radio standard.

The LoRaTool offer, a swiss knife for remote monitoring
The LoRaTool range gives the client the ability to remotely monitor virtually any type of electrical equipment. It is composed of:
1) an electrical interface module
2) a LoRaWAN connectivity, and
3) a web application

The solution has been conceived for industrial applications with three key aspects: compact, easy to use and multipurpose. First and foremost, the module fits in a box of dimensions 10 by 9.2 by 2.3 cm with a few mounting options (e.g. screws or DIN rail) giving the user multiple options to set it up close to the monitored equipment.
It further allows monitoring two inputs, to drive one output, and gives the option to use an external power. Last but not least, the LoRaTool module has been developed to be universal, empowering the user to monitor dry contacts inputs, pulse inputs (metering for instance), or analog inputs (0-10V, 0-20mA or 4-20mA), depending on its versions. LoRaWAN being a fully bidirectional communication technology, the output is based on a latching relay, in order to drive any type of electrical equipment in return.

The interface module sends over the LoRaWAN radio standard useful information for operations. The client has then two options to transmit those packets: use an operated network, deployed region-wide or nation-wide by telecommunication companies, or deploy its own network over one or multiple sites, potentially provided by iSecur.

The information is then centralized on secured servers. Accessible from any web browser, the interface iSecur SmartControl (http://my.isecur.io) gives a real time status of the monitored equipment. The user can then set up his alerts and notifications linked to the data transmitted from the equipment, and share the data with other users (e.g. the site’s manager can share with the remote technician).

A turnkey solution to transmit critical information on the system…

The offer is truly « plug and play ». In fact, once the user receives its material, he only needs to connect the electrical inputs of the module to the electrical equipment to monitor (e.g. on the power fault and the alarm dry contacts of a fire safety panel), or on the terminals of a meter, before pairing his module to his iSecur SmartControl account (e.g. flashing a QR code). The communication with the servers will automatically be done using a telco operated LoRa network or a deployed network. The user will then instantly see the status of his system on the app: Alarm, Fault, Level of a gauge, or instant consumption of his system.
The LoRaTool is THE solution for safety and management. Safety: it warns the user in case of a dysfunction. Management: it allows for a global monitoring and real time warning. Before LoRatool, the user used to be aware of the problem only by noticing its consequences, often much too late, or when he used to deploy a very heavy and expensive old school remote management system. The user can now monitor all or just part of its electrical equipment and be warned when it fails.
The LoRaTool DC module is an intelligent universal module that monitors up to two inputs simultaneously. Know instantly when one of your electrical devices fails without adding an expensive piece of equipment.

The user can also take advantage of the bidirectional communication of the LoRaTool to use it as an actuator and act on the system remotely, using the web interface from a smartphone or a computer. He can then activate a safety equipment, etc. by triggering the output dry contact switch.

The applications of this system are infinite, and have already found use cases in reporting fire information: alarms and faults from fire panels, reporting information from punctual detectors (for instance: UV flame detector), as well as monitoring industrial processes: machine faults, (tank) levels measurements and so on.

… in a robust and secure way

Given the critical level of the information reported in the Finsecur’s core business, the LoRaTool offer was designed to answer drastic constraints on the robustness of the information system. First, it was shown that the quality of service of a LoRa operated network was above 99%. Then, setting up acknowledgment mechanisms for the most critical information is another step towards ensuring the correct reception of the data by the network. Last, radio link monitoring mechanisms can be set to alert the user of a lost connection extremely rapidly (within 15 minutes, or even less).

The information security is built in. LoRaTool solution data flow is only visible by the user through the secured connection to he uses to access his account on iSecur SmartControl, but that safety would be completely illusory without the cryptographic mechanisms or the radio transmission (cf. LoRaWAN specifications), secure connections between servers, or even the security architecture of the servers.

A solution that learns and gives you specific recommendations

The iSecur SmartControl interface was conceived to keep, visualize, and analyze historical data reported from your system. Over time, the service will learn from the machine park, its behavior, compute statistics on its use, consumption and fault patern. This knowledge will enrich the user’s knowledge of its craft and help him optimize his equipment’s management.
iSecur SmartControl is a web application, which allows to share the data and interface it with other larger information system. Predictive maintenance is now a reality.
