gateProtect Releases Firewall Update

October 2010 by Marc Jacob

The German-based IT security provider gateProtect has released an updated version of its Unified Threat Management (UTM) firewall. The new features in Version V8.7 include a newly-integrated site-to-site failover function for SSL VPNs that enhances network accessibility for company subsidiaries. In addition, the update delivers a new, integrated landing page to facilitate the registration of new users on the firewall. gateProtect customers can download the new version of the firewall free of charge from the company’s website at https://www.gateprotect.com/mygateprotect.

gateProtect listens to its customers and has added the landing page to its Unified Threat Management firewall in response to their requests. When a user tries to access any URL on a computer that has not been set up for internet access via the firewall, the new version generates a registration dialog box. Users then enter their name and password and have their access rights assigned to them. This function is especially useful for services like the provision of internet access in hotels.

NEW: SSL VPN Failover

For site-to-site VPN connections via SSL, which are commonly used to connect a company’s headquarters with its subsidiaries, customers can now add a second IP for the destination server. If the first server’s IP address is unavailable, the new version of gateProtect’s firewall will automatically try to create the VPN tunnel using the second IP address. As a result, branch offices connected to their headquarters via a gateProtect VPN tunnel benefit from increased resilience against failures for their VPN connection.

Availability

The gateProtect UTM Version V8.7 is available now from gateProtect’s partner network. Companies interested in testing the product can download a fully functional, 30-day evaluation version of the gateProtect Unified Threat Management Appliance for VMware from the company’s website.
