ZoneFox launches first hosted UEBA platform to protect SMEs

October 2017 by Marc Jacob

ZoneFox — the Scottish cyber security company specialising in insider threats — has launched its first fully hosted platform, aimed at the mid-market.

Over the summer, it was revealed that nearly one million SMEs suffered a cyber attack in the last year, which is no surprise considering that SMEs host customer data, IP, and other prized assets. As such, with its latest release, ZoneFox will equip SMEs with the progressive technology needed to remain compliant with data laws and legislation.

The release can be found at the bottom of this email, and please see below for three supporting analyst quotes (from Gartner, Bloor Research, and Freeform Dynamics):

"For ZoneFox’s customers the strategy provides some attractive benefits. Firstly, it makes implementation easier for companies who have a mobile workforce. It doesn’t force them to VPN back into the corporate network to report back data (which generates a lag in reporting incidents) and to get updates. To this end, it removes the burden of maintaining the management infrastructure which would otherwise be a cumbersome endeavour.

Secondly, the use of AWS also means that customers can get a better service as the environment can be implemented faster, scale as needed and potentially deliver cost savings over time as computer and storage costs drive down. Lastly, organisations can run more intensive analytics which may not be possible if the technology was deployed on premise.

ZaaS, where 24/7 monitoring is implemented, will move the needle as it affords customers the ability to purchase the expertise they require, but leave their own teams to focus on incident response, incident handling and other higher value activities where knowledge about the IT environment and business is needed.

Companies can no longer afford to have staff distracted from higher value responsibilities, yet at the same time they need to bolster their detection and response capabilities. Managed detection and response services are the perfect, cost effective, resolution to this conundrum."

— Toby Bussa, Research Director at Gartner

"Through monitoring on the endpoint and agent-based approaches, UEBA enables organisations to better detect anomalies across their entire environments, from on-premise applications to those on mobiles and in the cloud. It provides the ability to detect threats at the user level, making it especially suitable for use cases such as privileged access management and for dealing with all insider threats."

— - Fran Howarth, Senior Analyst at Bloor Research (security)

"Cybercrime is an industry and whether you’re business is large or small, if it holds something of value you could be a target. Sophisticated security defence technologies have traditionally been the reserve of big businesses with well-funded budgets. Given the technical challenges running security systems round the clock, there is an opportunity for hosted and managed security services that relieve the skills and resources pressures many organisations in the mid-market face when it comes to protecting themselves against increasingly challenging attacks. But such offerings need to be robust and employ proactive measures, including threat hunting and intelligence, the same as the highly skilled security operations found in well run large enterprises. As cybercrime has become an industry, SMEs need to have the right tools and services available, especially given the important roles played by many in the complex supply chains that power the economy."
