Websense Security Labs : fake anti virus

September 2009 by Websense

Websense Security Labs have issued a new blog re fake anti virus. The rogue AV creators have developed a new ingenious twist - this time resorting to a friendlier, “greener” tone. The latest scheme states that, for every fake AV you buy, a donation will be made to an environmental care program. This ploy actually requires the user to buy malware with a credit card, and many unsuspecting people are falling for it.

“For many people making green lifestyle changes; swapping to eco friendly light bulbs and recycling paper: green software seems an obvious next step. The green industry is big business, and malware authors unsurprisingly want to cash in on this with a triple whammy. Not only is it a successful ploy to get malware onto computers, but people will pay for it, and freely hand over credit card details. Unfortunately the only green thing about this trick is the unhappy faces of the unsuspecting victims” said Dominique Loiselet, Director Regional Sales France and North Africa at Websense.
