Web security vendor SmoothWall reports record summer sales

September 2009 by Marc Jacob

Leeds, UK, Internet security vendor SmoothWall has reported record sales in July, the Company’s most profitable month to date, with year-on-year growth trends smashing targets despite the economic downturn.

CEO George Lungley says growth has remained consistent throughout the recession at roughly 40% year-on-year with Q2 2009 up 18% on the previous quarter, representing the Company’s eighth consecutive year of organic (as opposed to VC-funded) growth.

SmoothWall was the first security vendor to develop intelligent content-based web filtering, a now-essential technology that has rendered URL-blocklist based filters all but obsolete in the context of today’s dynamic and rapidly evolving web.

The Company’s reputation for intelligent, affordably priced solutions has seen its turnover triple in the past five years. Staff levels have also increased tenfold in line with this growth.

SmoothWall CEO George Lungley says value-added solutions are the key to the Company’s success:

"Our Guardian filter challenges some of the biggest names in IT on both price and features. Essentially we give schools and businesses the sophisticated security they need, but at a much more sensible price.”

A weak pound, Lungley notes, has also proved beneficial for the Company’s UK based customers:

“Most security vendors are based in the US which means their solutions are priced in dollars. With a weak pound and diminishing IT budgets, UK-based companies in particular are realising that they can get much better value for money by buying British-built technology from smaller but similarly competent UK-based vendors.”

SmoothWall is set to release a more powerful and scalable version of its hardware-based filtering appliance (Guardian Secure Web Gateway) to suit larger enterprises later this year.
