Vigil@nce - Xen: denial of service via HVM Caching

July 2013 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can use the memory to slow down the Xen host system,
in order to trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: Unix (platform)

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 24/07/2013

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The PCI Passthrough feature allows a guest system to directly
access to a PCI device.

However, on an Intel system with Hardware Assisted Paging (EPT),
an attacker can access to the physical memory, to slow down
caching operations. Technical details are unknown.

An attacker can therefore use the memory to slow down the Xen host
system, in order to trigger a denial of service.
