Vigil@nce - NetBSD: denial of service via posix_spawn

March 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can use posix_spawn(), in order to trigger a
denial of service on the NetBSD kernel.

Impacted products: NetBSD

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 06/03/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The posix_spawn() function is used to perform actions on file
descriptors, before creating a new process.

However, it does not limit the number of actions. A attacker can
thus request numerous actions, in order to force the kernel to
allocate a large memory area, leading to a panic.

A local attacker can therefore use posix_spawn(), in order to
trigger a denial of service on the NetBSD kernel.
