Vigil@nce: Linux kernel, integer overflow via RDS

November 2010 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can use a sendmsg() on an RDS socket, with a large iovec array, in order to generate an integer overflow, leading to a memory corruption.

- Severity: 2/4
- Creation date: 18/11/2010

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The RDS (Reliable Datagram Socket) protocol is used to transmit data in a non connected mode. It is supported by kernels since version 2.6.30.

The VIGILANCE-VUL-10086 (https://vigilance.fr/tree/1/10086) vulnerability allows a local attacker to use sendmsg() on an RDS socket, with a large iovec array, in order to generate an integer overflow, leading to a memory corruption.

However, this vulnerability was partially corrected. The Linux kernel is thus still vulnerable.
