Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: denial of service via xsaves/xrstors

March 2015 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An attacker can use xsaves/xrstors on the Linux kernel, in order
to trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: Linux

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 18/03/2015

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The XSAVES instruction saves the state of the Processor Extended
States Supervisor. The XRSTORS instruction restores it.

However, a local attacker can use these instructions to trigger a
fatal error in the kernel, due to an invalid label name.

An attacker can therefore use xsaves/xrstors on the Linux kernel,
in order to trigger a denial of service.
