Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: denial of service via BPF_S_ANC_NLATTR
May 2014 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
A local attacker can create a BPF filter using BPF_S_ANC_NLATTR,
in order to trigger a denial of service.
– Impacted products: Linux
– Severity: 1/4
– Creation date: 12/05/2014
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
A BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) filter defines the type of packets
to capture.
The BPF_S_ANC_NLATTR and BPF_S_ANC_NLATTR_NEST extensions support
filters on Netlink Attributes.
However, the kernel does not check the size of NLATTR data, thus
it reads after the end of the memory area.
A local attacker can therefore create a BPF filter using
BPF_S_ANC_NLATTR, in order to trigger a denial of service.
