Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: denial of service via arch_dup_task_struct

April 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can use a sequence of PowerPC instructions on the
Linux kernel, in order to trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: Linux

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 31/03/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Linux kernel can be installed on a PowerPC processor.

However, when the kernel creates a new thread, the
arch_dup_task_struct() function does not update the state.

A local attacker can therefore use a sequence of PowerPC
instructions on the Linux kernel, in order to trigger a denial of
service.
