Vigil@nce - FreeBSD: denial of service via mmap

January 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can enlarge the size of the stack of a FreeBSD
application, in order to stop the kernel.

Impacted products: FreeBSD

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 16/01/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

An application can enlarge the size of its stack by calling mmap()
with the MAP_STACK flag.

However, the kernel then tries to coalesce adjacent memory
regions, which triggers an assertion error in the vm_map_stack()
function.

A local attacker can therefore enlarge the size of the stack of a
FreeBSD application, in order to stop the kernel.
