Thales launches TEOPAD, an innovative security solution for smartphones and tablets running under Android

October 2011 by Marc Jacob

Today, at Les Assises de la
sécurité, the European Security and Information System Congress, Thales announces
the launch of TEOPAD, an innovative security solution for Android powered
smartphones and tablets.

TEOPAD allows to create a secure environment for hosting and using the applications
of an enterprise in complete security. This technological innovation offers a simple
and efficient response to the security problems encountered by companies when their
employees use their personal devices for professional purposes (the BYOD, or "Bring
Your Own Device", trend).
This solution confirms Thales’s position as an innovative player in the field of
cybersecurity.
The proliferation of smartphones and touchscreen tablets is the source of many security
headache in companies. This is largely due to the fact that, even if secure mobile solutions
exist, many users prefer – for practical reasons - to use their personal tablets or smartphones
rather than those supplied by the company, thereby generating the cohabitation of their
professional and personal data.

To address this issue, Thales has created TEOPAD, a security solution for professional
applications on smartphones and tablets that is compatible with all terminals and available,
initially, on Android platforms.

This innovative solution will be distributed by MDES, Mobile Defense Equipment & Services.
Thales TEOPAD solution consists quite simply in creating, on the user device, an
independent and secure zone in which the company can host all the applications (web
browser, e-mail app, chat, contacts and calendar management, document viewer, text
messaging, VoIP, etc.) and data of the employee in complete security. This zone allows to
protect the confidentiality and integrity of the information, and to control the execution of
professional applications. Communications with the enterprise information system are also
secure.
Switching from the personal environment to the professional space takes place simply and
smoothly by means of a dedicated icon.

This unique solution, based on a strong means of authentication, is entirely controlled and
managed by the company.
"With TEOPAD, the company can control the security of its information assets without
imposing a device on its employees. This goes with the flow of current trends: today, more
and more people want to be able to use their personal devices in a professional context.
Companies must be able to adapt to this without nonetheless compromising their security,
and that is where we come in," explains Franck Gréverie, VP in charge of Information
Technology Security / Cybersecurity activities, Thales.

Totally transparent for the end user, TEOPAD enables companies and administrations to
protect the information and applications handled by their employees in a mobile environment,
and to guard against the consequences of the loss or theft of a device.

TEOPAD benefits from all of Thales’s know-how in matters of cryptology and communication
systems security, and deploys Thales’s own patented security technology.

In addition, Thales proposes a service offering for TEOPAD through its partner, MDES. This
service offering ranges from the implementation of the solution, adapting it to the particular
circumstances of each customer, through to its deployment and even including the secure
hosting of the infrastructure. The user also benefits from a 24/7 technical support, offering
optimal service in supporting the user’s experience. TEOPAD is thus able to draw on
MDES’s experience in the deployment of secure mobility projects.
