T-Mobile Group Experiments Gemalto’s New SIM-Based Technology to Massively Deploy Mobile Applications
February 2009 by Marc Jacob
Gemalto announced that T-Mobile has selected Gemalto to develop prototypes of rich media applications based on Smart Card Web Server Technology (SCWS) in the SIM card. Gemalto provided the operator with its MultimediaReady SIM card incorporating SCWS technology, which enables applications to run directly from the SIM. This approach allows T-Mobile to develop applications on any SCWS-compatible handset and consequently, to broaden access to high-end services, while offering a multimedia look and feel.
“SIM technology has evolved over time, and the use of SCWS enables us to offer the rich media applications and interfaces that are integral to current mobile services,” added Philippe Vallée, Executive Vice President of the Telecommunications Business Unit at Gemalto. “This evolution meets T-Mobile’s need to make high-end mobile applications more and more widespread and Gemalto is proud to support their strategy.”
T-Mobile is one of the world’s leading operators serving over 123 million subscribers in Europe and the US. “We selected Gemalto because the company is a partner in SIM development,” commented Arnd Gallmann, Senior Vice President, Terminal Technology at T-Mobile International. “Our goal is to enhance the user experience of our customers by providing a broad range of terminal applications and handset customization. Gemalto provided a very innovative solution: using Smart Card Web Server technology to implement mobile applications in the SIM card.”
