Surfshark launches a browser extension upgrade with a CleanWeb 2.0

November 2022 by Marc Jacob

Cybersecurity company Surfshark released a significant browser extension upgrade. The new extension has its own dashboard, where users will find upgraded CleanWeb 2.0 with four essential features – ad blocker, pop-up blocker, data breach alert, and malware alert. Besides blocking browser ads and banners, the upgraded CleanWeb now also blocks video ads. The new CleanWeb 2.0 will be available only via the Surfshark browser extension for anyone who has purchased a VPN subscription.

With added Surfshark Alert features, users can now know which websites were leaked or infected with malware without upgrading their subscription to the Surfshark One bundle. Also, CleanWeb 2.0 has an integrated cookie pop-up blocker that will refuse (or accept the mandatory) cookie consent requests before they appear on the user screen. Lastly, besides blocking browser ads and banners, the upgraded ad blocker now also blocks video ads.

The updated browser extension is already available for Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. The company’s users have to update the Surfshark Browser extension, and they can start using the new dashboard and its features right away. The new dashboard is fully customizable since users can choose from four protection tools by clicking or turning off the respective toggle. New CleanWeb works separately from the VPN connection and can be used with or without it.

CleanWeb 2.0 is available only via the Surfshark browser extension, so all features work only on a browser level. If users only use Surfshark app, they would still be able to use the previous CleanWeb version, which would not be upgraded with the new features.
