Serco finds growing demand fo two-factor authentification managed security service

March 2008 by Serco

There is an increasing market demand to replace basic passwords with strong user authentication according to Serco, the international service company that provides outsourced and managed IT solutions to major private and public sector organisations. With many of its clients implementing remote access systems to provide more flexible home and mobile working, Serco has turned to Cambridge-based Signify as its partner to deliver a fully managed two-factor authentication service.

Integration of Signify with the Serco Service-Desk provides a seamless and secure authentication experience for Serco customers using the service, ranging from the London Boroughs of Southwark and Tower Hamlets to Walsall Housing Group and Wales and West Utilities.

Serco’s decision to partner with Signify reflects a growing industry trend to outsource specific security functions to specialist MSSPs (Managed Security Service Providers).

"Signify makes it quick and easy to deploy token or tokenless two-factor authentication to end users," says Keith Shaw, Security Services Manager at Serco Solutions, the IT arm of Serco. "Signify provides a fully integrated, non-stop service that covers every step of the identity lifecycle from shipping physical devices to end users, through ongoing management, to 24x7 support that ensures users are always able to log in securely, wherever they are. We have been using the Signify Service in-house and it has proved extremely reliable, so we are happy to be making the same service available to our customers as well."

"Systems Integrators are increasingly turning into Service Integrators," says John Stewart, director of sales and marketing at Signify. "A few years ago a systems integrator would deliver solutions built from hardware and software products; now they are moving to a model where they effectively knit in-house and third party services together to deliver a complete, fully managed service-based solution. And selling services rather than products generates a more reliable income stream and builds a longer term relationship with the customer."

"Partnering with specialist MSSPs such as Signify allows us to focus on integrating all aspects of the complete solution," adds Keith Shaw. "Delivering a 24x7 two-factor authentication service takes much more than simply running some servers; you need to mix policy, procedures, logistics and support to keep remote users happy and working productively around the clock. By focusing exclusively on two-factor authentication, Signify makes a great partner for Serco to work with."

The Signify Service offers flexible contract terms to suit short or long term projects and a choice of token and tokenless authentication options. Users can choose either to carry an RSA SecurID token that produces a new one-time passcode (OTP) every 60 seconds, or they can opt for the Passcode OnDemand service that delivers an OTP on request to their mobile phone, PDA or email box by SMS or email.

Headquartered in Cambridge, UK, Signify provides Secure Authentication Services to corporate and public sector customers to provide authorized access to sensitive information and systems. Signify makes it easy to replace static passwords with strong two-factor authentication including tokens, mobile phones and PDAs. Other Signify customers include B&Q, Kier Group, Eurotunnel, Norwich and Peterborough Building Society.
