SIA Education @ ISC and Special Events Kick Off

April 2013 by Marc Jacob

ISC West, the security industry’s largest gathering kicked off with SIA Education @ ISC. As the sole industry sponsor, the Security Industry Association (SIA) led off the conference with the debut of the SIA Education @ ISC program, featuring three full days of 60-plus intensive education sessions, and excitement surrounding tomorrow’s announcements of the SIA New Product Showcase Awards, which were judged today. The curriculum of wide-ranging topics and technology discussions are tied together by the theme, “Next Generation Security for the Next Generation Professional.” SIA added two new tracks dedicated to the technologies that are creating smarter buildings and cities and helping business enterprises learn to use hidden business intelligence to drive bottom-line improvements. It also includes a series of four sessions focusing on K-12 and higher education campus security.

The SIA New Product Showcase (NPS) explores the emerging technologies and products that are changing the landscape of modern security. Through the conference, participants will learn what it takes to turn data from access control systems, video and social media into actionable intelligence and apply it across various markets, including critical infrastructure, education and healthcare.

PSA-TEC @ ISC also held educational classes today. Included in this year’s educational sessions was a course on “Leadership at all Levels: Integrator-Proven Practices to Increase Professionalism and Profitability.” A panel of integrators discussed how effective leadership within the organization drives success for the company as a whole.

Providing additional education opportunities, The Smart Card Alliance held its all-day workshop, highlighting information about PIV, PIV-I and CIV specifications and the physical and logical access applications that these standards can support in a converged credentialing program.

Other ISC West special event highlights from today included the 10th Annual Alarm Industry Research and Educational Foundation (AIREF) Golf Classic, AIREF’s sole fundraising event of the year.

Three events are also scheduled: the SAMMY Awards, Security Sales & Integration magazine’s annual salute for the best sales, marketing and installation endeavors; the Security Industry Association (SIA)’s Customer Appreciation Reception; and the ISC West Kick-Off Party sponsored by Qolsys at LAVO.

Exhibition Hall Opens Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10

As the largest annual event in the United States for the physical security industry, ISC West commences tomorrow with a Grand Opening at 9:45 am sponsored by Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies. The sold-out show floor will feature tens of thousands of products, including more than 180 first-time exhibitors bringing never-before-seen products and solutions to ISC West. Among them is a pavilion of companies from the Door & Hardware Institute.

Another special product feature area will include the Public Security & Safety Expo presented by Interport Police which draws public security officials from around the world. Since this Expo was introduced, attendance by public security officials has risen by 40 percent, making it the place for them to network. In addition, to better serve ISC West’s growing community of International Exhibitors and address the feedback from attendee buyers, all 2013 ISC West International exhibitors are featured in their own exclusive and dedicated hall. In fact, the majority of the ISC West floor will be segmented, letting exhibitors choose their own specific industry category and, thus, facilitate the buying process for attendees.

This year, ISC West 2013 is also launching "Live With ISC,” sponsored by Anixter, a series of short interviews with attendees and exhibitors from all segments of the industry sharing their thoughts on the current and future state of the security space. All are welcome to share their insights. Stop by the Live! with ISC Booth in the Show floor lobby to share your insights. ISC West will be hosting all the videos on its show website as well as tweeting them out. Be sure to follow either online or on Twitter @iscevents.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, begins with the State of the Union: What Will It Take to be a 2020 Security Leader address, featuring a panel of 2013 leaders at 8:45 am. The SIA Education @ ISC program continues with its second day of intensive learning opportunities. This year’s 34th SIA New Product Showcase (NPS) Awards winners, judged by industry professionals, will be announced in the Show Lobby at 3:00pm. This year, there were more than 80 entries. At 4:30 pm, the SD&I Fast50 will honor the industry’s most dynamic growth companies in the Show Lobby.

On Thursday, April 11, the day begins with the annual Security 5K Run/2K Walk where close to 400 participants, run and walk to raise funds for Mission 500, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of children and communities in crisis.

With the success of tools, such as “My Show Planner” kiosks and an expanded ISC West Mobile for smart phones, ISC West has become one of the easiest large shows to navigate. ISC West Mobile sponsored by ASSA ABLOY features educational sessions, special events, show floor locations and an online exhibitor directory and interactive map. Attendees can access all the ISC West info needed on their iPad, iPhone, Droid, Blackberry or e-Reader.
