Quantum Brings All-Inclusive Deduplication Appliance to SMBs and Remote Offices

May 2010 by Marc Jacob

Quantum Corp. announced availability of its new, all-inclusive DXi4500 disk backup appliances. The turnkey DXi4510 and DXi4520 work with the leading backup software packages to provide non-disruptive deduplication, helping small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs) and remote offices simply and cost-effectively address their backup needs. Both DXi4500 models come bundled with all DXi(TM) software licenses needed to support backup — including in VMware environments — deduplication and replication, starting at just $12,500 MSRP.

Addressing SMB Challenges. SMBs generally struggle with a number of persistent backup challenges. To help them cope with limited backup windows, the DXi4500 appliances improve backup performance, typically by a factor of two to three. They also offer high deduplication ratios to combat the expense of rapidly expanding disk backup. In addition, deduplication enables cost-effective data movement, greatly reducing the difficulty and expense of media management and offsite data transfer for disaster recovery purposes. SMBs coping with increasing backup complexity will also appreciate how the DXi4500 appliances make deduplication easy to deploy and operate, with a simple NAS interface.

Meeting Remote Office Needs. The DXi4500 appliances also address remote office challenges, where managing tape backup and having confidence in restore capabilities can be an issue. They enable remote office tape replacement while leveraging high deduplication ratios to decrease bandwidth requirements for replication to a central data center for management and disaster recovery, providing true edge-to-core data protection. DXi4500 appliances are optimized for Symantec OpenStorage API and are currently undergoing qualification with NetBackup and Backup Exec. The OpenStorage API provides a single point of management across sites and storage tiers, automating the process of catalog-aware backup replication.

Two DXi4500 Models. Quantum offers two DXi4500 models for a choice of capacity points. The DXi4510 provides 2 TB of usable capacity, while the DXi4520 provides 4 TB. Both models offer RAID 6 protection with up to 400 GB per hour data ingest performance and support encrypted, compressed replication streams for up to 99 percent network bandwidth savings. They are designed to be easily installed by a customer or a Quantum reseller partner. In addition, Quantum offers phone-based support, as well as video tutorials, to step customers through the simple installation process.

Advantages over Software-Based Deduplication. Unlike software-based deduplication solutions, the DXi4500 appliances provide rapid, seamless integration and maximum client performance without requiring changes to existing backup architectures or potentially disruptive media server upgrades.

Latest Additions to DXi-Series. The DXi4500 appliances leverage the same enterprise-class software as Quantum’s DXi6500 midrange and DXi7500 enterprise systems. The DXi(TM)-Series protects a broad range of customer needs, scaling from less than 2 TB to more than 200 TB of usable capacity. DXi-Series customers typically cut backup time by more than 50 percent, decrease backup management time by nearly 70 percent, and reduce expenses associated with purchasing, managing and storing removable media by nearly 50 percent.

Price and Availability. The DXi4510 has an MSRP of $12,500 while the DXi4520 has an MSRP of $22,500. Both models are available through Quantum and its channel partners.
