Microsoft officially disclosed information about Windows 7

May 2008 by Emmanuelle Lamandé

Microsoft officially disclosed information about Windows 7 for the first time yesterday. Microsft’s goal with this disclosure is to make sure their customers are aware of the progress we’re making with Windows 7, how the work done with Windows Vista relates to the work being done with Windows 7 and how Microsoft will refine rather than replace, the kernel of Windows Vista. They also want to reiterate to customers that Windows Vista deployment today provides the smoothest transition path to Windows 7.

Tuesday evening at the D: All Things Digital Conference, Microsoft showed how a few of the multi-touch innovations first previewed in Surface will ultimately enhance the next version of Windows. Julie Larson-Green, Corporate Vice President, Windows Experience Program Management, joined Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer during their keynote to demo multi-touch. “Our customer research indicates that touch makes many everyday PC activities much easier, and that users believe it adds a more intuitive element of interaction with the PC. We believe this increased ease of use and control for the user will translate into increased demand for touch-enabled PCs and increased innovation in this space for years to come”.

The next version of Windows, Windows 7, is currently in development. We are on track to release this product for General Availability approximately 3 years after Windows Vista. Windows 7 builds on the long-term architectural investments we introduced in Windows Vista and then refined for Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008. We want to ensure that the investments our partners and customers are making in Windows Vista are fully respected and continue to deliver great value as they move to Windows 7. Therefore, one of the design goals for Windows 7 is that it will run on the recommended hardware we specified for Windows Vista and that the applications and devices that work with Windows Vista will be compatible with Windows 7. As we have actionable information to share with our partners and customers, we will continue to make more information about Windows 7 available”.
