KuppingerCole presents 8 Fundamentals for Digital Risk Mitigation in the Age of Transformation

May 2015 by KuppingerCole

The Digital Transformation of Business is unstoppable. It affects virtually all industries. The IoT (Internet of Things) is just a part of this transformation, at the technical level. However, without changing business models, organizations will not succeed. Furthermore, connecting things with apps and services is imposing new challenges. These include product security and liability issues, but also how to appropriately deal with customer “big” data. Identity, Access, and Security become critical success factors for the Digital Transformation of Business.

Martin Kuppinger, founder and Principal Analyst at KuppingerCole talked in his keynote presentation at the European Identity & Cloud Conference (EIC) about how IT has to transform and how Information Security can become a business enabler for the Digital Transformation of Business. He presented the 8 Fundamentals for Digital Risk Mitigation in the Age of Digital Transformation. The number one fundamental is that the Digital Transformation affects every organization and, according to fundamental number two, the Digital Transformation is here to stay.

Fundamental number three is that the Digital Transformation is more than just Internet of Things (IoT).

The Digital Transformation is already reality in many industries – without any connected things and Industry 4.0 (or „smart manufacturing“) is about connecting manufacturing environments and this „Operational Technology“ (OT). Connecting things for the sake of connectivity does not create business – for Martin Kuppinger it is the change in business models and the services that make the business and most business providing things will earn more with services than with the things. Fundamental number four for Kuppinger means that the Digital Transformation mandates Organizational Change and the fact that Everything & Everyone becomes connected is his fundamental number five.

Security and Safety is not a dichotomy. Companies have to merge OT and IT security because fundamental six means that it is not about safety versus security, it is about safety and security.

According to Martin Kuppinger, security is a risk and an opportunity and this is why he claims implementing Information Security as a business value as his fundamental for Digital Risk Mitigation number seven. Fundamental number eight says that Identity is the glue and access control is what companies need. Business need to manage and relate all the identities of humans, things, apps, devices, and service, and their access to succeed in the Digital Transformation.
