Kaspersky Lab awarded VB100 certification in Virus Bulletin comparative review

January 2012 by Marc Jacob

Both Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows and Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 have been awarded VB100 certification after being tested alongside nearly 60 other security solutions in Virus Bulletin’s unique independent comparative review, widely recognised in the industry. The results were published in December 2011.

VB100 certification is granted to products that meet the basic standards required to be recognised as legitimate and properly functioning anti-malware solutions. The ‘100’ comes from the need to prove a 100% detection rate for malware samples listed as “In the Wild” by the industry’s go-to virus cataloging authority, the WildList Organization. To be able to carry the VB100 badge, products also need to generate no false positives when scanning an extensive, up-to-date test set of clean samples.

Reflecting Virus Bulletin’s commitment to move with the times, the latest review allowed the tested programs to run real-time Internet access, allowing for improved detection from cloud-based look-up systems and increasing the chances of zero false positives. This change allowed the review to more accurately reflect a security solution’s real-world ability to detect emerging threats. The core certification set was also expanded to include the latest Extended WildList set, which covers a wider range of malware types - again, more accurately reflecting real-world scenarios.

The comparative review was conducted on a system running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. Testing was made up of three main parts: on-demand tests, where products were directed to scan sample sets by the user; on-access tests, where sample sets were accessed using bespoke tools that triggered products with on-read protection capabilities to check, and where necessary block access to, malicious files; and clean-set tests, made up of carefully selected – including many recent – legitimate files, to test for false positives. Both Kaspersky Lab products sailed through all three testing parts to get perfect results - 100.00%, 100.00%, and zero false positives, respectively.

Regarding Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows, Kaspersky Lab’s corporate solution, Virus Bulletin praised its “detection rates, [being] as excellent as ever … [with] VB100 certification comfortably earned.” It also praised the range of settings available, commenting that they are “provided in extreme depth - suitable for the most demanding enterprise environment,” and adding that they are also simple to locate and operate. Also highlighted were the simple and quick installation and the clear and easy user interface.

As for Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, Kaspersky Lab’s home solution, Virus Bulletin similarly rated highly its ease of installation (including no reboot), strong interface, plus a “wealth of controls available under the covers,” adding that “detection rates were splendid,” resource use was low, and scanning - fast.

Commenting on securing the VB100 certification, Nikita Shetsov, Director of Anti-Malware Research at Kaspersky Lab, said: “We are pleased that both Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows and Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 made the grade once again in this comparative review, which is highly regarded in the industry as a reliable indicator of basic malware detection ability. Virus Bulletin’s decision to allow cloud connection – in our case to the Kaspersky Security Network – is a welcome update to its methodology, allowing both our products to shine in terms of their ability to detect brand new threats as they emerge for the first time. And 100%, 100%, and zero false positives - well they just speak for themselves.”
