Infographic: Cloud and Mobile Adoption Increases IT Security Risks

February 2013 by

SailPoint published an infographic outlining recent research results that indicate that enterprises are aggressively adopting cloud and mobile solutions for mission-critical applications – a trend that is increasing the risk of security breaches and failed audits. The infographic, “Cloud and Mobile Adoption Increases IT Security Risks,” is based on SailPoint’s annual Market Pulse Survey, which measures both IT and business leaders’ attitudes toward identity and risk management, and how effectively key applications and sensitive data are being managed and protected in businesses today.

SailPoint’s 2012 Market Pulse Survey found a complex IT landscape, where organizations have become increasingly reliant on storing important, highly sensitive data, in the cloud, but have limited visibility into those applications and are struggling to govern access to them. The infographic outlines key findings from the survey that include:

IT leaders believe 1 in 3 mission-critical apps are currently in the cloud. This will increase to 1 in 2 by 2015. Adding to the challenge, more than 15% of business leaders admit they have no way of knowing if sensitive data is stored in the cloud at all.

The majority of companies surveyed do not block personal application usage at work, even though these apps are completely outside IT’s visibility. Approximately one-third of companies are fully locked down when it comes to personal app usage at work.

Almost half of business leaders say they always or often use the same passwords for personal web apps as for work apps.
Around two-thirds of companies are “very concerned” about corporate information security breaches.

Although approximately 60% of IT leaders realize that identity and access management plays a significant role in the prevention of security breaches, almost two-thirds of IT leaders say they are not very confident in their company’s ability to prove the effectiveness of internal controls over access privileges in an IT audit.
The 2012 SailPoint Market Pulse Survey interviewed 200 business leaders responsible for various key business departments and 200 IT decision makers at companies with at least 5,000 employees. Respondents were spread evenly across the US and UK. Interviews were conducted via an online panel. Loudhouse, an independent research agency, conducted the research on behalf of SailPoint.
