(ISC)2 launches free online Cyber Security Awareness Ressource Centre

October 2007 by Marc Jacob

(ISC)2® (“ISC-squared”) announced the launch of its online Cyber Security Awareness Resource Centre as part of a series of Cyber Security Awareness initiatives around the globe.

The Cyber Security Awareness Resource Centre is an online repository that houses free security awareness tools from around the world designed to be used by any organization or individual who wishes to promote online safety at work or within their community. The materials in the repository have been provided by (ISC)²-certified members - representing preeminent information security experts from corporate, government and academic arenas spanning Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific - and are available for public download at www.isc2.org/csa.

Tools in the Resource Centre include templates that can be customized by end users, such as posters, flyers, brochures, presentations, games, radio broadcasts and toolkits such as the SCIPP Family Pak®, a set of free security awareness resources designed to educate home computer users around the world on secure computing practices designed to protect personal information. SCIPP International® is a global non-profit organization dedicated to providing world-class security awareness training and certification for end users.

Topics covered in the Resource Centre include home networking security, identity theft, Internet privacy, emerging security threats, mobile security, software development and secure Web site design. Visitors to the Resource Centre can vote on their favourite materials. (ISC)² will announce the top five winners, each of whom will receive a US$1,000 (£500) cash prize, later this month.

With recent studies attributing as much as 60 percent of all computer security breaches to basic user errors, there is growing emphasis within organizations and communities worldwide on educating end users on the importance of security best practices.

(ISC)² supports cyber security awareness initiatives around the globe on a year-round basis. For instance, (ISC)² will be conducting online training sessions this Autumn for (ISC)²’s information security-certified member volunteers who will present on Internet safety to schools around Europe. Already, (ISC)² member volunteers have presented on Internet safety to more than 3,000 students in the UK in the past year using, among other tools, an (ISC)² brochure titled, “A Safety Guide for World Wide Websters”. Versions of the brochure have also been localized for Hong Kong and Malaysia. To download the brochure, or for more information about (ISC)²’s worldwide cyber security awareness efforts, please visit www.isc2.org/awareness.
