Google phishing scam - comment from co-founder and CEO of Egress

May 2017 by Tony Pepper, CEO and co-founder Egress

Following the news this morning that a phishing scam is tricking users into giving hackers access to their Google accounts, the comment from Tony Pepper, CEO and co-founder of Egress, a data security company.

"This is a clever scam. Google’s suite of productivity apps, like Google Docs, are incredibly popular and I’m sure we’re all guilty of opening documents and spreadsheets shared with us without really thinking that anything untoward is happening. After all, if you’re using it everyday, what’s unusual?

This is one of the main reasons for records being breached in the UK - employees accidentally sharing information they shouldn’t, whether that’s by unknowingly clicking on a phishing link like this or sending an email to the wrong person. While technology can help, it’s not a standalone solution. People need to know what to look out for and when to be cautious, and more training is needed to improve awareness. Technology should be used as a failsafe so when accidents do happen, and they will, there’s a net in place to catch them.

Over the next few days, anyone using Google Docs need to be vigilant, and businesses must make sure staff are fully aware of the dangers."
