Global Micro and Vaultive Partner to Accelerate Cloud-Based Email Adoption and Address Sovereignty and Residency Burdens

June 2013 by Marc Jacob

Global Micro, a Johannesburg-based managed services firm and the country’s most experienced hosted infrastructure IT provider, has partnered with Vaultive, a provider of persistent encryption gateways to retain ownership and control of cloud data. This partnership will enable South African businesses, organisations and financial institutions to migrate with confidence their messaging infrastructure to the cloud – whether Hosted Exchange or Microsoft Office 365 – while addressing critical data security and governance requirements.

The service is aimed at addressing the needs of risk-conscious organisations within the enterprise market, where security is a mission-critical concern alongside service resilience and availability. By tackling cloud data residency, privacy and unauthorised disclosure requirements as well as supporting security best practices as outlined by the Cloud Security Alliance, Vaultive complements the managed services and implementation expertise delivered by Global Micro.

With the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Bill expected to be signed into law later this year, South African businesses will for the first time be expected to comply with a set of data protection regulations. The Bill also outlines a set of requirements for transborder information flows that mandate similar protections for offshore datacenters.

The Vaultive gateway encrypts data before it leaves the trusted network to the cloud, ensuring that were the data inadvertently exposed or hacked in the cloud, or even subpoenaed by a law enforcement agency, the data would appear as useless gibberish. Vaultive’s persistent encryption ensures that by retaining the encryption keys, data owners maintain direct control over private data even when stored and processed in the cloud.

With Vaultive in place, businesses can maintain full control over their data regardless of where it is transmitted, stored and processed. This functionality set supports and addresses the responsibility related to the custody of personal information in two key ways:

— Firstly, by encrypting all personal information before it traverses a trusted boundary

— And, by retaining the encryption keys to data resident on a third-party service, organisations can point to system controls to demonstrate fulfillment of the protection and security safeguard requirements
