Gartner Says Worldwide External Controller-Based Disk Storage Market Grew 10.2 Per Cent in First Quarter of 2008

June 2008 by gartner

Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue totalled $4.3 billion in the first quarter of 2008, a 10.2 per cent increase over the same period in 2007, according to Gartner, Inc.

EMC, Dell, NetApp and Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens all experienced strong double-digit growth year-on-year among the top-tier vendors (see Table 1). EMC maintained the No. 1 spot overall, finishing the quarter with 24.1 per cent market share. IBM was in second place with 11.3 per cent of the market followed closely by HP with 11.0 per cent. Hitachi/HDS was in the No. 4 position with a market share of 10.1 per cent. Dell, after tying NetApp for the No. 5 spot in the first quarer of 2007, took over that position this quarter largely because of Dell’s acquisition of EquaLogic last year. Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens’ revenue grew considerably year-on-year, mostly because of Fujitsu Siemens Computers introduction of new brands in Europe. Other vendors increased their share of the market by 33.6 per cent year-on-year, finishing the quarter with 16.0 per cent of the market.

“A revenue growth of 10.2 per cent worldwide year-on-year indicates that the storage market is still in strong demand. Capacity shipments grew 48.9 per cent year-on-year to 1.1 million terabytes showing the continuing mounting need for additional storage,” said Robin Burke, research vice president for Gartner’s global Storage Quarterly Statistics programme.

“With 15 per cent growth the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region drove the overall market performance in the first quarter of 2008. This was in part due to strong double digit performances by five of the top eight vendors. Growth still focused on midrange products with a 58 per cent year-on-year increase for units sold in the $200,000 to $299,000 range. During the same time period revenue for products selling for $500,000 and up declined 12 per cent,” said Robin Burke, research vice president for Gartner’s global Storage Quarterly Statistics programme.

Gartner external controller-based disk storage reports reflect hardware only revenue, as well as hardware revenue associated with financial leases and managed services. Optional storage software revenue and storage area network infrastructure components are excluded.

Additional information on the ECB disk storage market is available in the Gartner Dataquest report “Market Share : Disk Array Storage, All Regions, All Countries, 1Q05-1Q08." The report includes vendor market share by data access method, price band, channel and operating system segmentation. The report is available on Gartner’s Web site.
