Entire US "no fly list" leaked online after being left on an unsecured server

January 2023 by Todd Carroll CISO, at CybelAngel

In the news today it was revealed that the entire of the US "No Fly List" was exposed online by a Swiss hacker who reportedly found three sensitive files stored on an unsecure cloud storage server. The comment from Todd Carrol the Chief Information Security Officer/VP of Cyber Operations at CybelAngel. Todd has 20 years’ experience serving in the FBI’s Cyber/Counterintelligence, Counterterrorism, and Intelligence Operations programs and had this to say about the situation.

The ability for an individual to dig around in an open server and see the amount of .csv files should be alarming. CommuteAir was given critical confidential data in order to protect the public and failed hard. The US Government also failed. They trust airlines, in this case, with data derived from National Security intelligence and do nothing to verify this data is secured outside of questionnaires and trust. CybelAngel helps their clients every day to determine if their trusted partners and vendors are securing critical data. Both CommuteAir and the US Government made a decision that "okay is good enough" and at the end of the day it wasn’t.
