Datacard® Desktop Issuance Solutions Driving Success for Vietnam Licenses
July 2014 by Marc Jacob
Datacard Group announced the deployment of more than 150 Datacard® desktop card printers to the Vietnam Road Authority to issue driver’s licenses to citizens in all the 63 provinces throughout the country.
“Working closely with MK Group, our trusted solutions partners in Vietnam, as well as FPT Group, the lead integrator on the driver’s license project, we were able to develop, deploy and maintain a highly secure, responsive and cost-effective licensing solution for the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam,” said John Lam, general manager of the government business for Datacard Asia Pacific.
The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam decided to make a transition from paper-based documents to plastic cards for their driver’s license due to the security and durability it provides. In addition to addressing forgery and alteration concerns that are common with paper licenses, the Vietnam government officials wanted to issue more durable documents with a national centralized database of driver licenses.
“The licenses they issue with our desktop systems offer a longer life and more security features,” added Lam. “As a result, re-issuance frequency for licenses is much lower, programs costs are minimized, and there are multiple opportunities to integrate licensing with other government identity programs.”
So far, more than 3 million licenses have been issued nationwide. The program has expanded to all provincial issuance offices throughout Vietnam as well, making it more convenient for citizens to receive their driver’s licenses. In addition, by printing the driver’s licenses on plastic cards, the Vietnam government is now able to offer high quality images with retransfer printing technology, which allows for over-the-edge printing of high-resolution photos, logos, text and background images.
