Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October 2023 by Experts

Cybersecurity experts give their views on Cyber Month implemented across Europe by ENISA

Blair Cohen, Founder & President of AuthenticID
● Passwordless Authentication: We’ve come to realize that passwords and security questions aren’t enough to protect people from cyberattacks. The shift toward passwordless authentication, including token-based and biometric methods, is poised to become a dominant force in cybersecurity practices. This evolution not only strengthens security measures but also simplifies the user experience, making it a win-win solution for both security professionals and end-users. With organizations prioritizing data protection and regulatory compliance, the mainstream adoption of passwordless authentication methods is expected to continue as a cornerstone of modern cybersecurity strategies.

Reed Taussig, CEO of AuthenticID
● Identity Authentication: With the ever-increasing sophistication of cyberattacks, it’s not enough for businesses to believe someone is who they say they are; they must verify it. Organizations that use security questions or passwords as their last line of defense are putting themselves and their customers at risk. To step up their security practices, businesses should rely on AI-driven biometric authentication, which requires a selfie, fingerprint, voice recognition or other biological characteristic captured in the moment, to ensure the user is who they say they are before gaining access to valuable assets. This type of next-generation authentication is essential to keeping bad actors at bay.

Kobi Kalif, CEO of ReasonLabs
● Cybersecurity threats such as malware and phishing pose serious widespread dangers to both organizations and individual internet users. Our research shows that these risks often go unchecked because most people lack awareness and education about cybersecurity best practices. For example, studies reveal that a majority of internet users choose simple, easily guessed passwords like "password" or "123456" for their online accounts and commonly share passwords across multiple sites. Just one successful phishing attack could easily compromise several accounts due to this lax personal security.

Furthermore, some victims may not even realize they have been targeted by cybercriminals. While an estimated $8.8 billion was lost last year from online scams, the true scope of losses is likely much higher. Many people may be unaware of more subtle attacks like small, incremental withdrawals from their bank accounts. This general lack of knowledge about the types of cyberattacks allows criminals ample opportunities to strike. Every individual must remain vigilant and skeptical of anything encountered online to help defend against these threats.

John Giglio, Director of Cloud Security at SADA
● Vendor consolidation will continue. We’ve seen a number of buyouts in the security space and this will continue to happen as the bigger players look to bolster their own portfolios and capabilities. This “arms race” will continue well into 2023 and 2024, and allow the large security players to offer more holistic, comprehensive suites of security solutions that meet a variety of business’ needs.
