Comment: Celer Network DNS Hijack

August 2022 by Chris Buijs, Chief Evangelist at EfficientIP

The comment below by Chris Buijs, Chief Evangelist at EfficientIP, on the DNS hijacking attack that hit Celer Networks.

“Cyberattacks that target the Domain Name System (DNS) can have a significant impact on business operations. The suspected DNS hijacking on Celer Network has resulted in the company shutting down its cBridge and could result in potentially damaging long-term effects.

Hijacking administrative access could be as simple as using a password, and user account in order to gain elevated access and change the records in the DNS. By changing these records, an organisation’s website could point towards a malicious IP-Address. Threat actors can steal data by recording responses on websites and monitoring traffic, which can then be used to learn and prepare for future attacks.

Customers, staff, and partners may get locked out of services for hours because of DNS hijacking. The average time for organisations to mitigate these threats stands at 6 hours and 7 minutes. The worst is when security issues have an adverse effect on the user experience and cause consumers’ trust in digital services to decline.

Unfortunately, cyberattacks on the DNS, like this one, are showing no signs of slowing down. All DNS-based attacks have increased over the last year (with DNS hijacking/credential attacks accounting for 28% of attacks) and, on average, organisations suffer seven attacks per year. Businesses cannot let their DNS be the weakest link in their security posture.

Organisations need to be very careful when selecting a DNS hosting provider by making sure they have dedicated environments, resources, and people on the DNS who have a security focus. Try to stay away from the cloud-provider DNS services as they tend to be focussed on performance, availability and content rather than security. A purpose-built DNS solution should include all the security features that not only protect the DNS itself, but also integrates with the security layers already in place. Full control is when you run your own DNS, on your own network, where you can do everything end-to-end.”
