Cisco Comment: UK Retailers’ websites at risk of cyber-attack

April 2016 by Terry Greer-King, director of cybersecurity, Cisco, UK, Ireland and Africa

Terry Greer-King, director of cybersecurity, Cisco, UK, Ireland and Africa comment:

“Cybercrime is a real and genuine concern for businesses in the UK. Backed by a multi-billion dollar industry, today’s cybercriminals are becoming more innovative than ever, finding new and sophisticated ways of targeting individuals or businesses, breaching systems and evading detection and they’re not discriminating against those of a particular size or industry.

Today there are essentially two types of companies; those that have been hacked and those that don’t yet know they have been hacked. Given the fact that 60% of data is stolen within the first few hours of an attack, yet more than 50% of all attacks manage to persist on systems without detection for months, if not years, it is essential that breaches are detected and resolved as swiftly possible.

The most effective way of mitigating all sources of risk is to assume an attack is imminent and by adopting a proactive, integrated approach to security. This involves prioritising security throughout the entire business and adopting a holistic cyber security policy that address the entire threat continuum – before, during and after an attack. Those businesses that have already learnt the hard way will be the ones most able to relate to this and will understand that security can no longer be an after-thought, whatever industry a business operates in.”
