Check Point Research’s security analysis spurs concerns over Google Bard’s limitations

July 2023 by Check Point Research (CPR)

With the slew of Generative AI intelligent platforms emerging, Check Point Research (CPR) recently conducted a security analysis of the latest one, Google Bard, comparing it against ChatGPT. What CPR found was several security limitations where the platform permits cybercriminals’ malicious efforts. After several rounds of analysis, CPR were able to generate:

• Phishing emails (demonstrating little to no restrictions on the creation of them)
• Malware keyloggers (a surveillance tool used to monitor and record each keystroke on a specific computer)
• Basic ransomware code

CPR will continue to monitor the worrying developments in this area and report as needed. In the meantime, Sergey Shykevich, Threat Intelligence Group Manager at Check Point has put together some comments on the team’s findings which are below, and you are welcome to use. We also have a technical blog with more details which can be found here and Sergey is available for interviews if you would like to set up a chat.

The comment from Sergey Shykevich, Threat Intelligence Group Manager, Check Point Research:
“It seems at the onset, Google Bard has not learnt the lessons from ChatGPT’s initial implementation of their AI platform, on implementing better anti-abuse measures related to cyber and phishing abuse of the platform. It must be noted that in the last 6 months, ChatGPT has carried out various improvements to make the life of cybercriminals much more difficult. However, Google Bard is still at a very immature stage so we hope that eventually, the platform will examine and embrace the required limitations and security boundaries as the tool further develops.”
