Cartes secure connexions: The mobile revolution, The balance between security & Mobility

September 2014 by

Smart portable devices are the symbol of this new reality. The wide range of devices has invaded the economic and social spheres, with smartphones taking the lion’s share. Mixing hyper connectivity, multi-channel communication, multi-service applications (electronic mail, gaming, media, geolocation…) and dual-use opportunities in both personal and professional contexts, smart portable devices are bringing major changes to current economic models.

as a major international event for the digital security industry will showcase secure solutions for payment, identification and mobility. It will provide the opportunity to take stock of the strategic situation of mobility and security thus illustrating the theme of the edition: ‘users on the move’.

THE MAIN CHALLENGE IS TO ENSURE SECURE ACCESS TO SERVICES AND PROTECT USERS’ PERSONAL DATA

In the light of the high economic and social value of this mobile revolution, the
full range of organizations (companies, national and local governments) is committed to providing users with secure access to the services they offer, anytime and anywhere.

The economic and technological stakes are all the more substantial as users on the move are expected to have full confidence in the smart portable devices they handle, especially for their financial transactions. Mobile network operators and service providers must take care of the end-to-end security chain, from the trusted management of the devices (especially against spam and malware), to secure access, applications and content.

A few figures regarding market trends:
?7,3 billion units: the number of smartphones, tablets and laptops in the world by 2020 (source: Gartner)
?26 billion units: the number of connected items (Internet of Things) by 2020.
?$600 billion: the estimated revenue of mobile services in 2015 (source: Jupiter Research)

The smart portable device is likely to become an extension of the individual in the ‘cyberworld’. Its added-value in people’s daily life is huge and has various forms: online and in-store payment, emergency calls in case of incidents in a vehicle, home-based monitoring of sick people or education and training of citizens.

… IMPLYING GREATER LEVELS OF SECURITY

It is therefore absolutely vital to ensure users’ protection and to take into account different levels of security, confidentiality and privacy as threats become increasingly sophisticated. During the first quarter of 2014, users of Android mobile OS have been exposed to an almost doubling of virus attacks on their smartphones, particularly in the context of financial transactions or crypto-currency management. Attacks were frequently caused during connections between a PC and a smartphone via a USB key.

Indeed, security is today the N°1 challenge that online services providers have to face. Risks they will have to manage for their customers will come from a wide variety of sources such as BYOD, management and storage of increasing volumes of sensitive data and risks.

The significant growth of cloud computing, especially in the professional sphere, represents another new and important form of risk. Flexible, rapid and efficient, cloud should be based on reliable computing platforms enabling secure access and data integrity.

NEW SOLUTIONS ARE GRADUALLY EMERGING

Dealing with these new security and mobility challenges requires solutions based on:
? Integration of trusted Virtual Machines in terminals and devices
? Distributed storage of public and private data
? Strong user authentication
? Securing communications (voice and data)
? Integration of electronic signature systems
? Secure connection to companies’ gateways
? Etc…

Success will depend on players’ ability to bring sustainable solutions and to provide interoperability of access platforms to services, thus enabling markets to fully develop.

SOME EXAMPLES OF CONCRETE SOLUTIONS FROM EXHIBITORS

? « Paiement pro » by w-HA (Orange)
? A complete mPOS solution for accepting credit card payment from a smartphone,
implemented by w-HA for Orange and aimed at its pro/SME customers.
? « Smart-SIC Virtualyzer» by Secure-IC
? The Smart-SIC Virtualyzer is an exclusive and unique software platform meant to
assess and optimize security of connected objects against malevolent attacks
and cyber-threats upstream in the design cycle. Security can therefore be
established directly from source code through simulation processes.

A RECENT AND PROMISING INITIATIVE: THE FIDO ALLIANCE

The Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) Alliance is a remarkable initiative that has federated in less than one year many industrial players around key issues of online security and authentication. Created in April 2013 with the aim of providing users with low-cost, easy-to-install and easy-to-use authentication standards, this initiative has enjoyed an unprecedented success. From 6 founding members initially, the alliance now has 130 active members.
The first marketing target has been finance and payment and specifications aim at overcoming the traditional login/password mechanism with robust authentication tools, mainly based on biometrics. Mobile devices such as smartphones enabling online access to services are the central target of efforts for reaching open, evolving and interoperable authentication solutions.

A CENTRAL THEME IN 2014 THAT REFLECTS THE ACTUAL SITUATION

The main theme for this edition, “Users on the move”, is a direct response to the growing needs for security and mobility of the end users. In 2014, CARTES SECURE CONNEXIONS will be the main not to be missed event for the entire industry. Companies participating in the event as exhibitors or speakers will present the latest innovations in security for payment, identification and mobility.
